Opportunity classes (OC) are for academically gifted and talented children in Years 5 and 6.
There are 75 primary schools with opportunity classes across NSW. They provide intellectual stimulation and an educationally rich environment. Hurstville Public School hosts four OC classes - two in Year 5 and two in Year 6 - as a regional resource for students in district schools who are offered a place through a regional process. Each class has 30 students.
Successful students attend the opportunity class full-time for the duration of Years 5 and 6. It is a two-year placement program. There is no provision to apply for Year 6 placement.
Application is usually made when the student is in Year 4. The application process becomes available at the end of April each year.
Following an offer of a position in the OC classes at Hurstville Public School, parents and carers will be invited to visit the school. Parents of non-local students who accept a place in our Opportunity Classes are advised that there is no provision for siblings to be enrolled in mainstream classes at Hurstville Public School.
Hurstville Public School is commited to the development of the whole child; we believe that success is not confined to academic areas, and we seek to broaden our students' and parents' understanding of the many varied ways in which success can and should be measured.

- Involves students in activities such as investigations, research projects, reports, debates and discussions.

Other Learning Opportunities
- Leadership training – through the Student Representative Council and group work within class time.
- Enrichment Programs / Intellectual Challenges – links with high schools, opportunities for learning and using critical thinking.
- Oracy Skills- emphasis on oral skills through Public Speaking and Debating.
- Competitions – access to school based and non – school based competitions.
- Performing Arts Groups – band, choir and dance groups and organised creative arts activities during a time-tabled section of a nominated day.
- Sport – PSSA sports include cricket, softball, oztag, soccer and netball. School sport focuses on skill building and games.
- School Workshops and Visits – performances from visiting groups.
- Excursions – regular excursions to enrich the learning program.
- E-Learning – enrichment through technology.
