NSW public schools provide opportunities for students to participate in Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE), where approved providers and authorised teachers are available.
During enrolment, parents and carers can select from the SRE and SEE options available at Hurstville Public School. Parents and carers can change their child's participation at any time by notifying the school in writing.
Students who do not participate in SRE or SEE are provided with supervised alternative meaningful activities (Non-scripture), such as reading, private study or completing other appropriate activities. Regular curriculum lessons are not taught during this time.

Special Religious Education, or SRE, is education in the beliefs and practices of an approved religious persuasion. SRE is delivered by authorised representatives of religious organisations approved by the NSW Department of Education.
The following SRE options are currently offered at Hurstville Public School, subject to the availability of authorised teachers.
Buddhist SRE
Buddhist SRE is provided by the International Buddhist Association of Australia – Nan Tien Temple.
The program introduces students to core Buddhist teachings and values, with an emphasis on mindfulness, compassion and the Three Acts of Goodness: doing good deeds, speaking good words and thinking good thoughts.

Catholic SRE
Catholic SRE is provided by the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney.
Catholic SRE teachers, also known as Catechists, are authorised and trained to deliver the approved Christ Our Light and Life curriculum. Lessons provide students with opportunities to explore the Catholic faith, the life and teachings of Jesus, prayer and Catholic traditions.

Combined Christian
Combined Christian SRE is provided through a combined arrangement involving the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, Presbyterian Church of Australia (NSW) and Australian Christian Churches.
Christian SRE provides students with opportunities to explore Christian beliefs and the Bible, ask questions about faith and life, and learn about the life and teachings of Jesus. Teachers are authorised and trained by an approved SRE provider.

Church of Living God SRE
SRE is provided by the Church of the Living God, Hurstville.
The Church of the Living God uses its approved Light from the Bible curriculum. The program uses age-appropriate Bible stories, activities and discussion to explore Christian beliefs, values and the teachings of Jesus.

Greek Orthodox SRE
Greek Orthodox SRE is provided by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
The program supports students to learn about Greek Orthodox beliefs, traditions, worship and ways of life using an authorised curriculum delivered by trained volunteers.

Islamic SRE
Islamic SRE is provided by the Islamic Charity Projects Association (ICPA).
The program supports students to learn about Islamic beliefs and practices, good manners and positive values, and living harmoniously within Australian society. The curriculum is designed for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and is delivered by trained and authorised teachers.

Ethics SEE
Special Education in Ethics (SEE) provides a secular alternative for students who do not attend SRE. At Hurstville Public School, SEE is provided by Primary Ethics, the approved provider of SEE in NSW public schools. Ethics classes encourage students to think carefully about ethical questions and develop their capacity to make well-reasoned decisions. Trained volunteer teachers facilitate discussions using stories, scenarios and questions rather than providing students with predetermined answers.
Through these discussions, students learn to listen to different perspectives, explain their reasoning, respectfully disagree, challenge ideas and participate in collaborative inquiry.

At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.
We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.
