Getting to and from school safely

As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.

Keep our school community safe by:

  • driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
  • being a good role model
  • never calling your child from across the road
  • using the safest place to cross the road.

Hurstville Public School - P&C Road Safety Campaign

Background

In 2014, our P&C was fortunate enough to be awarded a grant from NRMA to undertake a Road Safety Campaign across the school community. But with previous letters home about the problem, it didn't seem the message was getting to the right parents, since road safety continues to be a concern. So the P&C proposed a new and different approach. The vision behind the grant was:

Strategy:

  • To develop an educational program to target the children and equip them with the awareness and confidence to encourage mum and dad to do the right thing on the road

Outcomes:

  • The grant funds have been used to:
    • develop a 5 minute road safety video, starring kids from HPS talking to kids from HPS
    • print brochures and banners carrying our road safety message
  • Run an educational program based on the video in all classrooms for every HPS child

This our Road Safety video to be used as a teaching resource in our classrooms and to provide information to the local community.

For parents and carers of younger children

Discuss with your child how to be safe using these modes of transport:

You could also have a conversation about:

  • safe travel routes
  • alternative arrangements for when unexpected things happen
  • what to do in wet weather.

Subsidised school travel

Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.

  • The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
  • The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.
