Additional learning support

We ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.

If you think your child may need extra help at school, the first step is to speak with your child’s teacher or school staff. Sharing your concerns allows the school to notice any changes in your child’s learning or behaviour and start working with you to identify the best ways to support them. Together, you and the school can develop a support plan tailored to your child’s needs. This plan may include specialist assistance, such as support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect, as well as tailored programs for high potential or gifted students, and small group tutoring for targeted literacy and numeracy support.

Classroom adjustments are often made to ensure your child has access to the resources and guidance they need. This could mean using assistive technology, creating accessible classrooms, providing instructional resources, offering extra guidance or focusing lessons differently, and making changes to assessments. For example, students might be given more time, simpler language, breaks during tasks, or alternative ways to complete assignments, such as oral presentations instead of written tasks.

Support plans are reviewed regularly and updated as needed to ensure your child continues to receive appropriate help. Reaching out to your child’s teacher or school is a good way to begin the process and find out which supports might be suitable for your child.

Learning and support team

The learning and support team works to ensure every student receives the help they need at the right time. The team partners with families, teachers, and other staff to understand each student’s individual needs, create plans to support their learning, and adjust lessons as necessary. They regularly check on students’ progress and connect them with any extra services if required. The team includes learning and support teachers, school counsellors and psychologists, student support officers, teachers for vision and hearing needs, EAL/D teachers, Aboriginal education officers, and liaison officers. Their main aim is to help every student thrive at school.
