Wellbeing
When students feel safe, welcomed, and supported, they are more likely to do well in their studies. Our school help students by offering activities and programs that teach about mental health, building friendships, and staying healthy. Support staff, such as school counsellors and wellbeing officers, are available to assist students who may be facing challenges. The school aims to create an environment where everyone feels like they belong, no matter their background. Parents and carers are kept informed and involved in their child’s school life. Teachers also understand that each student is unique and may need different kinds of support.
How we support student wellbeing
Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
Teachers play a crucial role in creating a positive classroom environment. They encourage inclusivity, celebrate diversity, and work to ensure all students feel valued and accepted. This can include using teaching strategies that promote participation, recognising achievements, and providing support to students who may feel isolated or struggle socially.
Our school provide access to qualified wellbeing professionals such as school counsellors and psychologists. These staff can assist students with personal concerns, mental health issues, peer relationships, family matters, and more. Specialist staff can also provide targeted support for students with additional needs or specific challenges.
We Provide programs that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour.
Transition support is provided to students who are new to a school or moving between year levels (such as from primary to secondary). This includes orientation programs, buddy systems, and information sessions to help students adjust, make new friends, and understand what to expect.
At Hurstville public school we set clear guidelines about appropriate behaviour and how students interact with each other and staff. Codes of conduct, anti-bullying policies, and programs that teach respectful relationships, conflict resolution and ethical decision-making are all part of this.
Our staff make an effort to know students as individuals, understand their backgrounds, strengths and areas for growth. This close relationship allows for early identification of wellbeing concerns. Collaborating with families ensures a holistic approach to support and shared strategies between home and school.
Students with medical or health needs (such as allergies, asthma, diabetes or mental health conditions) have individualised health care plans. These plans are developed with input from the student, family, and relevant health professionals, ensuring appropriate support and safety during school hours.
We encourage students and families to discuss wellbeing matters openly with teachers, support staff or school leaders. Communication channels like parent newsletters, interviews, online portals, and school events keep everyone informed and involved in the wellbeing journey.
